The Gauntlet Half Marathon - 2009

The Gauntlet, a gruelling half marathon near Killarney  was voted 30 out of the ‘Top 50 Outdoor Events in 2011′ by Outsider Magazine.
In 2011, we were approached to create and design The Gauntlet brand, so that it was still instantly recognisable, but to show the toughness of this event.
The Gauntlet race, a  derivation of this ancient practice takes place over the mountain pass The Gap of Dunloe. The Gap of Dunloe (Irish: Bearna an Choimín) is a narrow pass between Macgillycuddy's Reeks and the Purple Mountains near Killarney, Ireland. The pass and run begins at Kate Kearney's Cottage and ends with a descent into The Black Valley.
We designed the race medal, taking inspiration from the race route.  The route profile crowns the medal, above the mark of Tyr - the Norse god of heroic glory. The race represents a battle against the odds, the route and the insane race organizers who have you running the winding route away from Killarney into the Black Valley and then back over to the starting point separating the warriors from the wimps. Blood sweat and tears is the cost of the medal by which competitors will be crowned and coveted.
The race medal was then incorporated into various advertising pieces to promote the race.  We delivered 3D renders and a 3D data file to assist with the medal manufacture, which the organisers arranged themselves.
Finishers will have proven themselves triumphant.
